Assembly Labor Chair Ash Kalra Responds to Court of Appeals’ Unanimous Ruling Against Lyft and Uber

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Ash Kalra (D-San Jose), Chair of the Assembly Committee on Labor and Employment, released the following statement today in response to the Court of Appeals’ decision to uphold a lower court’s ruling which found that the continued misclassification of Uber and Lyft drivers would cause them irreparable harm and directed the companies to immediately classify them as employees:

“Today’s unanimous decision by the Court of Appeals is an affirmation of our state’s strong labor standards and is a victory for rideshare workers everywhere who are fighting for basic workplace protections. These greedy corporations have been exploiting and profiting off their employees for years with zero accountability while denying them fair wages, paid sick leave, and healthcare benefits. The law is clear: what Lyft and Uber have been doing is illegal and California stands with gig workers.”
