Assemblymember Kalra Announces List of Emergency Service Resources In Response to Coyote Creek Flooding

While the heavy rains of the recent storm have passed, more rain is expected this weekend and continued emergency preparedness is critical as flooding remains a concern. Many areas are still unsafe to access and it is advised that residents should not return to their homes until authorities determine that it is safe to do so. Flood water and homes, cars, and belongings that have been flooded should be treated as contaminated.

California Employment Development Department (EDD) Local Assistance Center
Beginning February 25, the California Office of Emergency Services will establish a Local Assistance Center to assist those impacted by the flood, and the EDD will be one of the participating agencies. The EDD staff will be on site to provide information and assist individuals with their Unemployment Insurance claims and any employment services they may need.  Staff will also be available to answer any tax related questions local business owners may have. The location and hours of the Local Assistance Center are as follows:

DMV Local Assistance Center
The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will offer limited services to San José area flooding victims at an assistance center opening at the Shirakawa Center, located at 2072 Lucretia Avenue, in San Jose. The temporary center opens Saturday, February 25 at 9:00 a.m.
At the assistance center, affected customers will be able to order, replacement driver licenses, identification cards, vehicle registration and title, substitute license plates and stickers, and disabled person placards. In addition, they can acquire vehicle disposal paperwork, driver record printouts and submit change of address forms. Only payments of cash, check or money orders will be accepted. These services are also available at local DMV field offices.

Cars Towed in Flooded Areas
Was your car towed during the Coyote Creek Flood? Vehicle owners will not be charged tow fees, and will need to follow these simple steps to collect their vehicle:

  1. Residents can visit the San Jose Police Department Auto Desk (201 West Mission Street) or call at (408) 277-4263.
  2. Provide the vehicle's license plate number and the registered owners identification.
  3. The Auto Desk will run the license plate number to determine where the vehicle was towed to: Alongi Tow, Century Tow, or Matos Tow.
  4. Owner will then be able to make contact with the specific tow company for release of their vehicle.

Evacuation Centers - Now Open
Evacuation centers offer a location for residents to connect with family and friends in a safe, dry place. They are not intended as overnight shelters, but are drop-in centers, open 24/7. Water and snacks are available.

Overnight Shelters (Red Cross) - Now Open
The overnight shelters are operated by the Red Cross and the San José Department of Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Services. These shelters cannot accept pets, but residents can take their pets to the San José Animal Shelter for safekeeping (2750 Monterey Road, www.sanjoseanimals.com.)

  • James Lick High School – 57 N. White Rd 95127 (this location is unable to take supplies or food at this time)
