Preparing for Public Safety Power Shutoffs

Public Safety Power Shutoffs Hero Graphic

Unfortunately, it is likely that a PSPS event could happen again depending on the weather. To help prepare for the next time, here are some helpful tips and resources. As always, if you have any questions or need more information, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

Ways to Prepare:

  • Check to see if your home will be impacted at http://www.pgealerts.com/pspsupdates
  • Have a plan to connect with family if needed
  • Write down important phone numbers
  • Fully charge all devices, including back-ups
  • Acquire and have fully charged back up mobile device batteries or power sources
  • Make sure to have fresh batteries on hand
  • Be sure to plan for medical needs, such as medication that requires refrigeration and devices that will need power
  • Make sure emergency kits are stocked and up-to-date
  • Make sure back-up generators are ready for use
  • Since a Public Safety Power Shutoff could last for several days, please be aware that:
    • Fully stocked freezers usually keep food frozen for two days after losing power (if not repeatedly opened).
    • Half-full freezers usually keep food frozen for about one day (if not repeatedly opened).
    • Refrigerators usually keep food cold for up to four hours if the door remains unopened

Are you or do you know of someone who is dependent on electrified medical devices?

  • Make sure you register with PG&E’s Medical Baseline Program. Enrolling in this program will help to ensure that local services are aware of your status.
  • Should outreach be needed, being able to contact you or a loved one to see if you need assistance could be critical.
  • To qualify, a qualified medical practitioner must certify that a full-time resident in your home requires use of qualifying medical devices to treat ongoing medical conditions.
  • Please visit the online application and learn more about the program requirements at www.pge.com/medicalbaseline

Sign up for Zip Code Alerts

  • Although PG&E customers already will receive alerts specific to their address, this tool is also especially useful for tenants, caretakers, travelers, and parents of school-age children.
  • More information about PSPS Zip Code Alerts is available online at www.pge.com/pspszipcodealerts.
  • To sign up for PSPS Zip Code Alerts, those interested can call 1-877-9000-PGE. Alerts will be delivered via automated call.  Text and email alerts will be available in the near future.
