Disasters are common in California and we need to be prepared for when the next one strikes.

Devastating fires, earthquakes, floods and other recent disasters are clear signs we need to be more proactive in preparing and protecting ourselves, our family and property. In 2017, the Coyote Creek flood in San Jose resulted in 14,000 residents evacuated and many of them lost their homes. From 2013 to 2018, 5,395,088 acres of land was destroyed by wildfires in California.

Those fires caused devastating casualties and damages and increased the risk of flash flooding, leaving one in five Californians vulnerable in the aftermath. Just last week, an earthquake with magnitude of 6.4 - the largest one in two decades - hit Southern California, with aftershocks felt as far as 150 miles away from Los Angeles. These events could happen anytime and I want to help you prepared for future disasters.

Join me, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Santa Clara Unit, San Jose Fire Department, San Jose Office of Emergency Management, and San Jose Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services for a “Family Emergency Preparedness Day” event at the Berryessa Community Center on July 29 from 6 PM to 8 PM. Experts will go over life-saving tips to prepare for disasters and what to do during a disaster or emergency. There will also be tips on water safety for adults and children.

Date: Monday, July 29 from 6 PM - 8 PM

Location: Berryessa Community Center, 3050 Berryessa Rd, San Jose, CA 95132
